The docking maneuver – a real adrenaline moment for many skippers.

Especially in crosswinds, under curious eyes, and with a crew that doesn't always know what's next, this is where the wheat is quickly separated from the chaff. Docking isn't rocket science – if you know the most common mistakes and avoid them deliberately.

In our latest YouTube video, we show you clearly and in practical terms how to identify and confidently master the five biggest docking mistakes. Here you'll find the post in written form – ideal for reading up and preparing for the next cruise.

1. Going too fast or too slow

The right speed is key. If you are too slow, you have no rudder effect – especially dangerous in wind. If you are too fast, you risk damage to the dock or the neighboring boat. The solution: Enough speed for the rudder to work effectively, but as little as possible. Maneuvering speed is the magic word.

💡 Pro tip: Approach with some momentum, then shift to neutral – the boat glides calmly on and you have full control.

2. Underestimating prop walk

The so-called prop walk – especially when reversing – can be your helper or your enemy. Most yachts have a left-turning propeller. That means: When reversing, the stern is pushed to starboard.

Use this effect to your advantage, instead of working against it. Plan your reverse maneuver so that prop walk helps you – not hurts you.

Important: Ideally, test on the first day which way the stern pulls when you reverse.

3. Wrong rudder position when going astern

Many skippers immediately put the helm over – a typical misconception. Without way through the water, the rudder has no effect.

Better: Keep the rudder centered, engage reverse, pick up some way – and only then steer with the rudder.

Wrong: Helm fully over before the boat moves.
Right: First movement, then steer

4. No or wrong crew briefing

A well-prepared team is worth its weight in gold. Many failed docking maneuvers have a simple cause: poor or no preparation.

Brief your crew at least 30 minutes before the harbor maneuver:

  • Who is on which line?
  • Who is monitoring the side clearances?
  • Who listens to whom? (Answer: Only the skipper!)

A clear division of roles brings calm, safety, and confidence on board.

5. Wrong order of the lines

A classic mistake – securing the mooring line first. Wrong! Always secure the windward stern line first, i.e., the line on the windward side. It stabilizes the boat.

Only when both stern lines are fast does the mooring line follow – safely and without risk to the propeller. This way you pull the boat back in a controlled way and tension all lines perfectly.

Windward line – leeward line – mooring. Always in this order.

Dock safely with a system

Whether crosswind, a narrow berth, or curious onlookers – with the right moves, every docking maneuver becomes confident and relaxed. The five biggest mistakes when docking are easy to avoid – with the necessary knowledge, a clear plan, and a well-rehearsed crew.
