Modern and connected electronics on board a yacht are now taken for granted. We have compiled some of the most important technical aids on a charter yacht for you.
Radio on Board – Why the VHF Radio Is Important for Your Safety
Many underestimate it, some ignore it, but in an emergency it can save lives: the radio on a charter yacht.
It is standard equipment on every cruise, but only a few skippers really know how crucial it is in an emergency – and which dangerous misconceptions about radio use at sea persist. In our latest video, we explain why radio is not a relic of the past, which mistakes you should avoid, and how to prepare optimally.
Radio certificate – mandatory or optional?
In popular charter areas like Croatia it is clearly regulated: at least one person on board must hold a radio certificate. But in countries like Greece, Italy, Spain or Turkey, hardly anyone cares (at least officially).
But beware:
Just because a radio license is not required doesn’t mean radio is unimportant. As a skipper, you carry responsibility – and that includes the ability to act correctly in an emergency. The radio is your link to everyone within range – not just one person like with a mobile phone. In an emergency, that can make all the difference.
The most common misconceptions about radio use at sea
-
„I have a mobile phone – that’s enough!“
A widespread misconception. At sea, mobile reception often disappears after just a few nautical miles. And even if you have signal: you only reach a single person. Via radio, however, you reach all ships and coastal stations within range at the same time – an invaluable advantage in emergencies.
-
„My radio is on, so I’m monitoring.“
Not quite. Many leave the device on but don’t actually listen. Music, wind, or conversations can easily drown out an important call. A distress call that goes unheard can cost lives and even counts as failure to render assistance.
-
„A distress call is expensive – better to wait.“
Wrong. Every Mayday distress call may and should be made when there is danger, and it can be canceled at any time if the situation improves. No one is punished for requesting help. Hesitation, on the other hand, can have fatal consequences.
Theory is important, but real safety is built on the water. If you want to deepen your knowledge and experience radio procedures under real conditions, a yacht charter is the best next step. At Charterbar Yachting you will find suitable yachts for every experience level – from a relaxed cruise with a skipper to a bareboat charter.
